The arrival in school of the world’s biggest map of England and Wales caused quite a stir this week. The 13 x 11m map has been laid out on the floor of Eaton Grove Main Hall and all of the girls have spent a lesson interacting with the map, searching for places, following rivers and motorways across the country and just marvelling at the dimensions and variety of the landscape. In Monday’s assembly taken by the Geography Department, we managed to fit the whole of the senior school in rows sitting around the coastline and the teaching staff gave a practical demonstration of how migration can be shown across the map, moving from their place of birth to their university city and then to Norwich. The patterns and distributions were interesting to see; a North-South divide seemed quite clear. Stafford House enjoyed a similar assembly on Tuesday morning, before coming over in their classes on Wednesday. Thursday and Friday saw five local Primary and Preparatory schools visit the school to enjoy the map; St Nicholas House School, St Thomas More Junior School, St William’s Primary School, Robert Kett Junior School, and Colman Junior School all enjoyed their visits and lessons given by the Geography Department.

The Mapland evening on Tuesday was another fun event, this time run for parents, teaching staff and Friends of Norwich High School. Parents got stuck in with some practical demonstrations with the map and there were also presentations given about the history of the Ordnance Survey and showing some of the Geography residential fieldwork the girls get up to in the 5th and 6th Forms. Some delicious regional food and wine of England and Wales was enjoyed as we all wandered the length and breadth of the country.

We would like to thank the NHSA committee and the Friends of Norwich High school for their generous financial support in helping fund this event.

9th November 2011

Britain
is a walkover for Norwich High girls!

PRESS CALL: You are invited to come into Norwich High on Friday 18th
November, between 10am and 12.00pm.
60 Year 6 children from St Williams Way Primary School in Norwich will
be visiting the map. Owain, can we invite a few Norwich High girls in for the
press thing – possibly girls from my Press Team?

You are also welcome to attend our evening Reception on Tuesday 15th
November. Members of the
Norfolk Geographical Association will be at the event (7.00-8.30pm). A variety
of different food from around the UK will be served at this event in
celebration of our varied culture – including Norfolk’s own Cromer Crab!

Information:

From 14th
to18th November, the world’s largest map of England and Wales,
measuring an incredible 11m x 13m, will be coming to Norwich High School. Girls from the Polliwiggle Nursery to the
Sixth Form, as well as guests from a number of other local schools, will be
walking the length and breadth of our country every day as they explore this
unique Mapland map.

The map is made up
of all the OS Landranger map sheets put together in a durable form. It will be
delivered by forklift truck into the school and laid out on the floor of main
hall all week. Pupils will spend time studying the map and have fun doing some
of the activities. These include following
the River Tees from source to mouth or walking up the M1 to see where it ends. “We
are really looking forward to hosting this amazing map”, commented the Head of
Geograophy at the school, Mr Owain Hall.
“Mapland is a hands-on, feet-on map! The children will be able to wander
around the coastline, stand on the highest peaks and discover the islands of
Britain! We are very excited about this
opportunity and are looking forward to exploring the map”.

Local primary and preparatory
schools have also been invited in to Norwich High on Thursday and Friday 17th
and 18th November.

And on the Tuesday
evening (15th November) the wider school community will enjoy an
evening of sampling regional food and drink specialities from around Britain,
whilst exploring the map. This will be a fun opportunity for staff, parents and
friends of the school, as well as members of the Norfolk Geographical Association,
to take part in light hearted activities.

-
Ends -

Editors notes:

Mapland is a organisation which promotes the use
and hire of the worlds largest floor maps within schools and other educational
settings. Mapland England and Wales creates an incredible learning environment and
it is available for hire, complete with educational activities, to schools and
other educational organisations.

Mapland England and
Wales is printed with Ordnance Survey map data at the 1:50,000 scale
(Landranger series) and the whole of England and Wales are covered including
all the islands in their correct locations.

Mapland
creates an incredible learning environment – a massive topographical floor
map of England and Wales that is completely walkover. Mapland is a unique all
school resource that appeals to all ages of primary and secondary school
pupils. It is a highly memorable experience that brings Geography alive right
in your school. It is also an excellent teaching resource for other subject
areas such as History, Mathematics and English.

All
on one giant floor map of England and Wales, pupils can:

See
their village, town or city in relation to the rest of England and Wales.

Understand
North, East, South and West, and grid references.

Understand
scale, distance and overhead perspective.

Learn
about English and Welsh geography and visualise land use – forestry,

farming and mountain areas.

Appreciate
the impact of urban areas and transport networks.

Find
and discover the far corners of England and Wales.

Follow
roads, railways, rivers and valleys.

Walk
the coastline, stand on the highest peaks and even walk up the M1!

Mapland England and Wales is best
photographed from a height and as such a camera extension pole is very useful
and will allow for great pictures.
